Chapter 8: Rhyme and Repetition

As he knelt beside Lilith, Lucifer wanted to share this with her. Their child’s gestation had taken much longer than any of them had expected, years had passed, but the time was upon them. This was the moment of truth. With Lilith’s pain and sacrifice, a new angel would be born into their family, and they could truly begin to create new life without Adonai.

Still, Lucifer was plagued with doubt and worry for his queen. Lilith was trying to be strong, he could tell, but the agony was plainly evident on her porcelain face. With his left hand, he wiped her brow with a cloth already soaked through from her perspiration, and he allowed her to inflict all the pain she wanted on his right hand. Lucifer was honestly surprised; Lilith was strong enough to crack boulders with her bare hands, but she had only pulverized two of his knuckles.

Though he was relieved that was the worst of it, Lucifer knew she was holding back.

“It shouldn’t be much longer, I think. From what I observed in the primates, this stage of labor is followed closely by the birth,” Beleth stated as he knelt between her legs, a bucket of water to his side and a stack of bloodied rags to his right. For the first few hours, blood had trickled out from some internal damage, but Beleth had persuaded them it was normal in primate birth. While Lilith choked down a scream, Azazel arrived with fresh rags which he placed beside his brother, quickly picking up the soiled cloth before retreating once more, muttering under his breath.

“Are you sure this is normal, Beleth?” Lucifer asked, still staring at his queen’s pain-stricken face, but he could hear the exasperated sigh from his brother just a few feet away.

“You know I have no way of knowing that. There is no precedent for this; it’s all a guess,” he stated, clearly annoyed at the question he had already answered a dozen times. “If you recall, I did not suggest you continue.”

“Well, we must,” Lilith said weakly, trying to laugh and failing in her moment of lucidity. “We have made a commitment, I believe.”

“Hush, Lil,” Paimon said opposite Lucifer, drawing his gaze momentarily. Although she was still looking straight into her sister’s face, she noticed him wavering. “You save your strength and your words. It’s important you keep all of your energy.”

“Oh, I am sure a few words won’t AH!” Lilith tried to argue, but then a contraction hit her and she squeezed both Lucifer’s and Paimon’s hand hard enough to break a lesser creature.

“Your sister is right, my love,” Lucifer agreed, using the affectation with a small amount of guilt. “You have more than enough on your plate. You just focus on bearing with the pain.”

“There’s…there’s so much,” Lilith squeaked out, her spine arching as the spasm tore through her. As she opened her mouth wide and stifled a scream, her abdomen distended above her and Lucifer’s eye drifted to her belly.
